Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 17 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016 to ensure that to ensure that older people in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Seven reports are 18-outcome announced registration inspections, four refer to 10-outcome inspections, four reports refer to a dementia care thematic inspection, and two are single specific issue inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in eight centres. These eight inspection reports show that residents’ needs were met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and Regulations.

However, inspectors also found evidence of non-compliance in nine centres. In these centres, residents’ needs were not always met and non-compliances were identified in areas of safeguarding and safety, safe and suitable premises, governance and management, and health and safety and risk management.
